Turkish Spring

Written on June 10, 2013 by MEA Team in News

After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city center, which is planned to be demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police interfered to protestors in a harsh way by using tear gas, pepper spray and pressurized water. Since the 31st of May, turmoil in Turkey continues and many people have been hospitalized due to usage of excessive power by Turkish police and moreover, the mainstream media has been astonishingly reluctant to cover all these protests. After the protests in Istanbul, others flared up in 60 cities and Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan left the country for his visits in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. In fact, these protests are not about a park, there are many other reasons lying behind which caused Turkish people with different ethnicity, political views and background to reunion and resist against government.
